Portion for the ten minutes they actually have — a half-empty box that comes home empty beats a full one that comes home full.

2. Run a practice lunch at home.

Before the school year (or this weekend), hand them the packed box at the kitchen table and step back.

Can they open every clip and lid solo? Does anything need cutting? You'll find out in five minutes what's been quietly going wrong for a term.

3. Give them a reason to open it.
